Trumpeter Tom Strait to present alumni recital March 31
Dr. Tom Strait will present a trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. March 31 in the Russell Fine Arts recital hall. The performance, including works by Jean Francaix, George Enescu, Anthony Plog, and Eric Ewazen, is part of Henderson State University’s 125th Anniversary Alumni Recital Series.
Strait will also lead a trumpet master class at 7 p.m. March 30 in the recital hall. Both events are free and open to the public.
A Henderson graduate, Strait has been on the faculty at Minnesota State University Moorhead for 15 years. He teaches brass instruments and directs the MSUM Jazz Ensemble. Strait holds a doctor of arts degree in trumpet performance from the University of Northern Colorado, as well as degrees from Henderson and the University of Texas.
Before arriving at MSUM, Strait taught for several years at both the university and public school levels, and served in the U.S. Air Force playing with the USAF Academy Falconaires.
As an active freelance trumpet player, Strait has performed with many artists, including Bob Hope, Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, Doc Severinsen, and Randy Brecker.
He currently serves as principal trumpet with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra.
Strait’s past teachers include Donald Kramer, Raymond Crisara, and William Pfund. He is a Yamaha performing artist.
Henderson is celebrating its 125th anniversary by presenting a performance series showcasing some of the university’s best alumni musical talent.
