Sullivan a finalist in trombone competition

May 17, 2017 by Steve Fellers

Sullivan a finalist in trombone competition

Elijah Sullivan, a senior instrumental music education major at Henderson State University, is one of three finalists for the International Trombone Festival Alto Trombone Competition. He will compete in June at The Juilliard School in New York.

Sullivan recorded his audition tape late last year, and was notified in February that he was selected as a finalist, along with student musicians from Indiana University and the Royal Academy of Music in the Netherlands.

While attending the competition, Sullivan will attend master classes and performances by several well-known musicians and groups.

An alto trombone is more difficult to play, compared to the standard b-flat trombone he normally plays, according to Sullivan.

After he graduates from Henderson, Sullivan plans to attend graduate school and focus on a performance degree. He aspires to be a professional musician, and already performs with several ensembles, including the Stardust Big Band.

Sullivan is from Westville, Okla.
