Students recognized for their achievements
As the 2016 spring semester comes to a close at Henderson State, many highly-successful students will begin work on their post graduate degrees, while others will participate in prestigious summer opportunities.
Radiography
Two years ago, Henderson put its first students into the radiography program at Baptist Health College in Little Rock. By agreement, the students who are successfully accepted to this program take two years of prerequisite courses at HSU, two years of radiography courses at BHC, and graduate from Henderson with a B.S. in radiography. BHC accepts about 10 students each year. This year, five Henderson students have been accepted, including:

Chemistry
Three students were recently accepted to medical school at UAMS for the fall. They were chemistry/biochemistry majors or worked in the department on research projects:
• Chase Elkin, a biochemistry/biology double major, presented research at multiple meetings at the local, regional, and national levels.
• Duy Ha, a biology major, also presented research at multiple venues.
• Erin Yancey, a chemistry/statistics double major, performed research in computational chemistry at the University of Tennessee over the summer and presented research at a couple of national meetings.
Biology
• Itzela Cruz – Ph.D. Program in Molecular Biology, University of Nebraska – Lincoln (teaching assistantship)
• Jonathan Eagle – Ph.D. Program in Plant Pathology, Washington State University (research fellowship)
• Leah Efird – Doctor of Dental Surgery Program, University of Tennessee School of Dentistry
• Seth Eiland – Physician Assistant Program, UAMS

Music
• Alan Burns (B.A Music, trombone) will be attending Indiana University to work on a master’s of music in trombone performance.
• Jacob Caballero (B.M. Music Ed, trumpet) will be attending the University of New Mexico to work on a master’s of music in trumpet performance.
• Claire Howard (B.M. Music Ed, flute) placed in both the Excerpt and Solo competitions for the Louisiana Flute Society. She also received two scholarships to attend the Rocky Ridge Music Center’s Young Artist program this summer.
• Hunter Mabery (B.M. Piano Performance) will be attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England to study collaborative piano.
• Tanner Oglesby (B.M. Music Ed, voice) has been awarded a scholarship to participate in a choral conducting workshop in Aix-en-Provence, France, this summer.
• Rafael Powell (B.M. Saxophone Performance) will be attending Texas A&M University at Commerce to work on a master’s in music in woodwind performance, and has received a teaching assistantship in jazz studies. Powell also won the Arkansas MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition and received an honorable mention in the division finals.
• Orlando Riveros (B.M. Piano Performance) has been accepted to four different graduate programs, and will likely attend Indiana University to work on a master’s in music in piano performance.
• CamRyn Stillman (B.M. Music Ed, voice) has accepted a position directing choirs at Pinnacle View Middle School in the Little Rock School District.
• Elijah Sullivan (B.M. Music Ed, trombone) has advanced to the final round of the International Trombone Association competition, and will compete at the Juilliard school in New York City this summer.
• Ariya Tai (B.M. Piano and Violin Performance) has been offered full scholarships to the Sewanee and Hot Springs Music Festivals.
