Students attend Alley Scholars Summit

May 17, 2017 by Steve Fellers

Students attend Alley Scholars Summit

Seven Henderson State University students attended the Fourth Annual Alley Scholars Summit at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville Feb. 28. Minority students from three states heard distinguished speakers from Walmart, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Tyson, and Conoco-Phillips as they participated in panel discussions.

The Alley Scholars Summit gives minority students and those from other underrepresented groups the opportunity to meet and hear the success stories of a diverse group of working professionals. “The summit serves the call to increase diversity in the fields of engineering and business,” said Jennifer Zarzosa, assistant professor of marketing at Henderson.

It is sponsored by Alley Scholars, a non-profit initiative for underrepresented students established by Troy and Unnice Alley with support from the Gerald and Candace Alley Foundation.

Henderson students attending the summit were: Sasha Zavala of Mena; Yanira Harper of Gurdon; Marc Newborn of Arkadelphia; Ty’Ron McCollum of Prattsville; Demetre Calhoun of Warren; Edward Lewis of Hampton; Mairette Mbarga, international student.

“This is the first time Henderson participated in the summit,” Zarzosa said. “It was a great experience for our students.”
