Student pianist wins performance showcase
Orlando Riveros, a senior piano performance major at Henderson State University, won first place in the Trinity Presents Collegiate Performance Showcase in Little Rock April 12. Riveros was one of six finalists chosen from universities across the state.
He competed against seasoned soloists from the University of Central Arkansas, University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, Arkansas State University, Ouachita Baptist University and Harding. Finalists were chosen from a pool of applicants who submitted recorded auditions.
“Orlando is a very dedicated student who is aware of what it takes to succeed, and is determined to achieve his goals,” said Dr. Hee-Kyung Juhn, associate professor of applied piano and director of keyboard activities at Henderson. “The music program at Henderson laid a strong foundation for him. Orlando, in return, serves as an excellent role model for our students and an ambassador for our department and university.”
Riveros is an international student from Asuncion, Paraguay. He has been playing piano for more than 10 years. He has won many awards while at Henderson, including second prize at the state-level competition organized by the Music Teachers National Association.
In addition to playing the piano, Riveros occasionally serves as organist at a local church, and is the violinist/concertmaster of the HSU Chamber Orchestra.
