Speaker to address drone warfare Nov. 3

Dr. Bradley J. Strawser, an authority on the moral questions surrounding war and military ethics, will talk about the use of drones in combat Nov. 3 at Henderson State University.

Strawser will present Killing at a Distance: The Ethics of Drone Warfare in the Garrison Center Lecture Hall at 7 p.m. The free event, sponsored by Henderson’s Philosophy Club, is open to the public.

Strawser is an assistant professor of philosophy in the defense analysis department at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, and a research associate at the Oxford University Institute for Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict.

He previously served as a Resident Research Fellow at the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership in Annapolis, Maryland. He was also an officer in the United States Air Force and taught philosophy at the U.S.  Air Force Academy.

Dr. Steven Todd, assistant professor of philosophy at Henderson and Philosophy Club advisor, said, “Anytime you introduce a new technology to a culture that doesn’t have it, there’s always a moral element to it. There’s a tension between principle and practical.
