Nelson takes helm of HSU McNair program

Dr. Shanea Nelson has been named assistant director of Henderson State’s McNair Scholars Program. Nelson was a McNair scholar during her undergraduate studies at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Research and Counseling from Louisiana State University.

Most recently, Nelson was director of Student Success at College of the Ouachitas in Malvern where she developed and implemented a comprehensive student development and retention program for at-risk students. She also served as assistant director of the McNair Scholars Program at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge..

The McNair Scholars Program prepares low-income, first-generation and minority undergraduates for graduate study at the doctoral level. Each year, 25 McNair Scholars participate in academic year and summer activities that include research, preparing for graduate school, teaching, and more. The McNair Scholars Program aims to increase the number of groups underrepresented in doctoral programs.
