Library hosts Jane Ross photo exhibit

Library hosts Jane Ross photo exhibit

Henderson State University’s Huie Library is hosting an exhibition of photographs by the late Jane Ross, an Arkadelphia philanthropist and professional photographer. A reception will be held from 1:30-3 p.m. May 23 on the library’s first floor.

The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will include photographs taken by Ross of works of art from around and the world, as well as some of her original photos. It will be on display throughout May, which is Arkansas Heritage Month.

Ross was a prominent businesswoman and philanthropist in Clark County. She worked as a Navy photographer in Washington D.C. in 1943, then studied color photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., the home of Eastman Kodak, where she received her degree in 1947.

Ross returned to Arkadelphia where she owned and operated a photography studio until 1955. She then took over and operated her grandfather’s forest products business. Along with her mother, Ross established the Ross Foundation in 1966.

Ross died in 1999, but the foundation continues its community support.

The exhibit is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage and funded by the state’s 1/8-cent conservation tax.
