Journal features Gilpin’s design
The scenic design work of Doug Gilpin, professor of theatre arts at Henderson State University, was chosen for inclusion in the recently published summer edition of the theatre journal TD&T, an industry journal for Theatre Design and Technology.
Gilpin’s scenic design for Other Desert Cities was selected for the 2016 USITT Design Expo Exhibition, a biennial juried design exhibition. The exhibition is part of the national United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) annual conference held this year in Salt Lake City, Utah.
This is Gilpin’s third selection for the Design Expo. His scenic designs for Titus Andronicus were featured in the USITT Design Expo Exhibition 2006 and the 2014 biennial juried design exhibitions, and in the national journal TD&T both summers.
He has received numerous other recognitions for his work. His featured design images included a production photo of his scenic and lighting design from Playhouse on the Square’s production of Other Desert Cities, a model photo and design sketches.
Gilpin was one of 152 designers to showcase their work in the invitational portion of the exhibition, which included scenery, lighting, and costumes from designers across the nation. Participants ranged from students to university designers and working professional designers. Sixteen were selected for the juried exhibition team of nationally recognized professional designers. The winners for all the categories are featured in the Summer 2016 issue of TD&T, distributed in September.
Gilpin’s presentation included process sketches, research images, a finished one-quarter-inch white model, painter elevations, final drafting and production photos from the show.
“I had a lot of interest in my work at the conference and compliments from other designers at the conference,” Gilpin said.
He served as a guest set designer on three shows for the Circuit Playhouse in Memphis during the 2015-2016 seasons.
“On all three shows, I had to design the scenery some seven to eight months out from the opening,” he said. “In each case there were two design phases, then I went onsite for the set painting phase during the last nine days prior to the opening.”
Gilpin is a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and former ACTF Region VI design chair. He received his M.F.A. in design from Texas Tech University, a 2007 Individual Artist Fellowship from the Arkansas Arts Council, and is a three-time recipient of Memphis Ostrander nominations for his theatre work in Memphis.
In addition, Gilpin has designed for Minnesota Repertory Theatre, several Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre seasons, Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival, University of Central Arkansas, University of Memphis and most recently for the Circuit Playhouse in Memphis.
