Guest pianist to lecture, perform Nov. 13

Acclaimed concert pianist and piano scholar Dr. David Northington will present a lecture and recital at Henderson State University Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Russell Fine Arts recital hall.

The event is free and open to the public. Northington will also coach Henderson piano students in a master class before his lecture.

Northington has toured extensively in France, Portugal, and Spain as an artistic ambassador for the United States. His concert tours have included the United States, Europe, Canada, China and Russia.

Following his debut recital in New York’s Carnegie Hall, The New York Times called Northington “an immensely gifted musician … who combines the technical mastery of a virtuoso with the musical sensitivity of a poet.”

His masterful musicianship has earned first prizes in the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the East/West Artists Competition and the American Music Scholarship Association’s International Competition, as well as the Judges’ Prize at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition.

In addition to being a gifted musician, Northington has given master classes at many of the leading conservatories in the countries in which he has toured. He has since taught on the faculties of several universities and is currently professor of piano at the University of Tennessee’s School of Music.

Northington has also been the recipient of the Tennessee Music Teachers Association’s Teacher of the Year Award, the Tennessee Governor’s School of the Arts Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Artist of the Year Award. He earned his degrees at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Yale University School of Music.
