Constitution Day program Sept. 24
Henderson State University will observe Constitution Day Thursday, Sept. 24, with a presentation by Wendell Griffen, trial court judge for the Fifth Division of the Sixth Circuit in Pulaski County. The program, entitled Constitution in the News, will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Arkansas Hall.
Griffen previously served as an appellate court judge where he authored more than a thousand opinions. He has taught law at the Bowen School of Law, and is chief executive officer for Griffen Consulting Service. Griffen also serves as a pastor for the New Millennium Church in Little Rock.
As a skilled orator, Griffen has been a strong advocate for workplace diversity, judicial independence, and a champion of civil rights.
Colleges and universities throughout the nation celebrate Constitution Day with various activities, according to Dr. John W. Graves, chair of the Social Sciences Department and professor of history. “Constitution Day was originally introduced by U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd who was concerned about what he perceived to be a growing lack of basic awareness about our American constitutional system among the public at large,” Graves said.
