May 17, 2017 by Steve Fellers

Comic-Con has Henderson connection

Henderson State University will be well-represented at the 2016 Comic-Con International convention in San Diego this month during its affiliated Comics Arts Conference. Several Henderson faculty, students, and alumni will serve on discussion panels for the event.

Comics Arts Conference creates appreciation for comics and related popular art forms through the conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture.

Comic-Con has presented thousands of special guests at its conventions, bringing together comics creators, science fiction and fantasy authors, film and television directors, producers, writers, and creators from all aspects of the popular arts.

Dr. Randy Duncan, professor of communication at Henderson, is a co-founder of the Comics Arts Conference. He and Dr. Travis Langley, professor of psychology at Henderson, are among the conference’s organizers. Both will serve on various panels.

Other participants from Henderson State include: Dr. Michael Ray Taylor, professor of communication; Ashley Bles; Katrina Hill; Dylan Weaver; Katherine Russell; Taylor McSwain; and Emily Blanton.

Langley, author of Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Night, is a prolific writer and a much sought-after expert on comics and fictional characters.

Duncan, Taylor, and David Stoddard, professor of art, recently combined their talents to write Creating Comics as Journalism, Memoir and Nonfiction which outlines the steps to creating a graphic nonfiction story. Duncan is also co-author of The Power of Comics: History and Culture.
