‘Cavalcade of Cartoonists’ coming to HSU

In what Henderson State is calling a “Cavalcade of Cartoonists,” the university will host three accomplished comics creators on campus this month.

Andy Warner, whose comics have focused on the Syrian crisis, will present a public lecture entitled Drawing Journalism: Andy Warner’s Comics at 12:30 p.m. April 14 in Arkansas Hall room 209. He will meet with the Nonfiction Comics class later in the day.

On April 15, comic artist and illustrator Sonny Liew will join Warner for a comics workshop and portfolio review at 11 a.m. in the Russell Fine Arts building, room 144. The public is invited.

Scott McCloud, author of the award-winning Understanding Comics, Reinventing Comics, and Making Comics, will visit with Henderson’s Nonfiction Comics class at 1:30 p.m. April 21 in Arkansas Hall room 207. Visitors are welcome.

Warner has applied his firsthand knowledge of the Syrian region in the creation of comics such as The Man Who Built Beirut and Syria’s First Family. His comic The Displaced called attention to the Syrian refugee crisis before it reached its current crisis.

Warner’s comics have been published by The United Nations Human Rights Council, Slate, American Public Media, Symbolia, The Center for Constitutional Rights, and UNICEF. He has lectured on nonfiction comics for the U.S. State Department and University of California at Santa Barbara.

Liew is an Eisner-nominated comic artist and illustrator whose works include titles for DC Comics, DC Vertigo, Marvel, First Second Books, SLG and Disney. He currently resides in Singapore. He is touring the United States to promote his new book, The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye.

Liew’s other works include the New York Times best seller The Shadow Hero with Gene Luen Yang, My Faith in Frankie with Mike Carey, Malinky Robot, and a new Doctor Fate comics series with Paul Levitz.

McCloud is an internationally recognized authority on comics and visual communications. He has been a speaker, teacher, or consultant at MIT, Google, Harvard, Pixar, DARPA, The Sydney Opera House, and about 400 other institutions.
