Submit comments for accreditation visit

October 17, 2017 by Henderson State

Henderson State University’s Teachers College will host an accreditation visit from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Feb. 24-27, 2018.

Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the site team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party’s relationship to the provider (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates).

We invite you to submit written testimony to:

CAEP
1140 19th Street NW, Suite 400
Washington, DC 20036
Or by email to: callforcomments@caepnet.org

Such comments must be within the specified period and based on the core tenets of CAEP accreditation standards of excellence, which recognize that:

In CAEP’s performance-based system, accreditation is based on evidence that demonstrates that teacher candidates know the subject matter and can teach it effectively so that students learn. In the CAEP system, EPPs must prove that candidates can connect theory to practice and be effective in an actual P-12 classroom.

A professional education provider that is accredited by CAEP is expected to be involved in ongoing planning and evaluation; engaged in continuous assessment and development; ensure that faculty and programs reflect new knowledge, practice, and technologies; and be involved in continuous development in response to the evolving world of education and educational reform.

Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the respondent’s relationship, if any, to the institution (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). Copies of all correspondence received will be sent to the university for comment prior to the review. No anonymous testimony will be considered.

TRiO programs awarded $3.5 million in grants

October 4, 2017 by Henderson State

TRiO programs at Henderson State University have been awarded seven grants totaling $3,557,418.

“While sharing the common mission of furthering higher education for disadvantaged students, each program has its own unique focus,” said Henderson State President Glen Jones. “We are proud to have earned a record number of grants this year to provide student services for prospective and current students. These programs help ensure our students will succeed in their undergraduate careers and beyond.”

In the 1960s, the Higher Education Economic Opportunity Act established the first of several federally supported educational outreach programs for underprivileged students. Now, federal TRiO programs include eight different programs: Upward Bound, Talent Search, Student Support Services, Veterans Upward Bound, Educational Opportunity Centers, Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program, Training Program for Federal TRIO Programs Staff and Upward Bound Math-Science.

Henderson State’s newly funded Upward Bound program received a five-year grant totaling $1.2 million to serve Garland County students attending Lakeside, Fountain Lake and Jessieville School Districts. The program focus is to provide students with college planning, counseling, tutoring, mentoring, test prep assistance, assistance with their college applications and the access to work-study opportunities.

Henderson State University also received grants for:

  • Ronald E. McNair Scholars program – $1,161,300
  • Student Support Services – $337,296
  • Student Support Services Disability – $261,384
  • Veterans Upward Bound – $263,938
  • Talent Search – $246,000
  • Educational Opportunity Center – $242,823

Henderson State ranked for its great value

October 4, 2017 by Henderson State

Henderson State University jumped 11 spots and was named No. 16 among southern colleges and universities in the 2017 Washington Monthly Best Bang for the Buck rankings.

For its regional college rankings, Washington Monthly used data on each university’s six-year graduation rate, how much students earn 10 years after enrollment and whether students are working to pay off student loans. In addition, these rankings factored in the number of first-generation students each college or university enrolls and the net price for enrollment.

“At Henderson State, we believe that a higher education degree is an investment in the future,” said President Glen Jones. “Nearly half of our students are first-generation college students and many come from south Arkansas. We recognize the importance of providing a high-quality experience that is also affordable.”

When factors such as standardized test scores and Pell Grant awards are taken into account, the predicted median earnings for a Henderson State graduate are about $30,000 per year. However, median earnings for Henderson State graduates are almost $35,000 per year, 10 years after enrollment.

During the 2016-2017 academic year, 45 percent of Henderson State’s enrollment was first-generation students, much higher than the predicted 38 percent. These enrollment predictions are based on ACT or SAT scores and Pell Grant awards for each school.

Washington Monthly’s rankings are dedicated to evaluating colleges and universities on the outcomes for students and graduates, a different but relevant way of assessing the transformative capacity of a bachelor’s degree from a particular institution.

“Since 2012, we’ve ranked America’s four-year colleges and universities based on their ‘bang for the buck’— that is, the extent to which they charge students who aren’t rich a reasonable price for quality education that will advance them in their careers,” said Robert Kelchen, an assistant professor at Seton Hall University and data manager of the Washington Monthly College Guide.

Washington Monthly calls its Best Bang for the Buck list, the “exclusive list of schools that help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.” In 2016, Henderson State was ranked No. 27 in the south.

Herzfeld to speak for Constitution Day

September 14, 2017 by Henderson State

Henderson State University will observe Constitution Day Tuesday, Sept. 19, with a presentation by Robert Herzfeld, circuit court judge for Saline County. The program, entitled The Constitution: Not Perfect, but Not Too Shabby, will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Arkansas Hall.

Herzfeld received his undergraduate degree from the University of Mississippi and graduated with distinction from Emory Law School in 1998. He is serving his ninth year as Saline County circuit judge.

Herzfeld has family connections to Henderson State. His father graduated from Henderson in 1967, and his grandfather played center for the AIC Conference Champion Reddies before graduating in 1931.

Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day) is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is normally observed on Sept. 17, the day in 1787 that delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is presented locally by Henderson State’s Social Sciences Department. It is expected to conclude by 1:15 p.m.
