Henderson State University’s Department of Music will present its annual President’s Concert in the Russell Fine Arts Harwood Recital Hall on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The program features student soloists selected as winners of a competition in November.

“The opportunity for some of our best students to perform solo works accompanied by an orchestra including members of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra is one of the highlights of our entire year,” said Dr. Steven Becraft, coordinator of the competition. “This year’s winners were selected from 24 competitors by three impartial judges, and the level of talent was extremely high.”

Soloists include: Bobby Humphries, a percussionist from Everton, who will perform a marimba transcription of the Bach Violin Concerto No. 2 in E major; Claire Howard, a flutist from Texarkana, Texas, performing the second movement of the Ibert Flute Concerto; Casey Williams, a tenor from Malvern, and Tiv Cumberbatch, a hornist from Sherwood, performing selections from Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings; Elijah Sullivan, a trombonist from Westville, Okla., who will perform the Wagenseil Alto Trombone Concerto; Rafael Powell, a saxophonist from Jacksonville, performing selections from Maurice’s Tableaux de Provence; and Orlando Riveros, a pianist from Asuncion, Paraguay, performing the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Charles and Anita Cabe of Gurdon will be honored during the concert for their generous support of Henderson and its music programs. Both attended Henderson where they met and married in 1967.

Charles Cabe is president of Cabe Land & Timber Co., president of the C. Louis & Mary C. Cabe Foundation, and a board member of the Horace C. Cabe Foundation.

Anita Cabe is a member of the Henderson State University Foundation Board, and was a member of the Henderson State Alumni Board. She also served on Henderson’s Board of Trustees for 14 years until her retirement in 2012.

Past President’s Concert honorees include: Dr. Glen Jones, Bobby Jones, Dr. Charles Welch, Dr. Charles Dunn, Dr. John G. Hall, the Board of Trustees, Betty Bruner, Eugene Kuyper, Jesse Branch, Paul Barringer, Mary Ella Clark, Dr. Maralyn Sommer, Diamond Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Ross Foundation and Southern Bancorp.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Becraft at 230-5412 or becrafs@hsu.edu.
